What we’re about…

We’re about great beers, brewed for your enjoyment

It’s simple really – we’re about brewing a wide variety of really good, flavourful and distinctive traditional beers in casks and bottles. We’re about creating your drinking enjoyment!

Shropshire Hills Beauty celebrates our local countryside.

You may have heard the phrase ‘Proud Salopians’, and that’s also what we’re about. We’re proud of our beers and we’re proud to brew them in South Shropshire. Why? Because our area has almost everything – super little towns, villages and pubs, friendly people and stunning scenery.

The Wood Brewery itself sits in Wistanstow village, right on the edge of the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (for which we brew a celebration beer). To the east is Flounders’ Folly, a stone tower sitting on top of Callow Hill. To the west, Sibdon and Wart Hill show up. To the south there’s Stoke Wood, overlooking English Heritage’s Stokesay Castle, and the ancient hill fort earthwork of Norton’s Camp. The lane that runs directly through our village, right past the brewery and our brewery tap The Plough, is an old Roman road – Watling Street.

From here we deliver our hand-crafted beers to many local pubs and shops and we go much further afield too, into the West and South Midlands and Wales and even up as far as the Potteries and occasionally down to the Home Counties.

We usually brew about 4 beers at any one time, and through the year, with our seasonal and special brews, that can amount to up to 20 different ales, each one quite distinctive from the next.

Our ‘Sheer Folly’ special brew raised £900 to help restore the local landmark of Flounders’ Folly.

Charity donations

We’re proud to play an active part in our local communities and over the years we have donated proceeds from several special brews to deserving local causes and charities.

Visit our brewery tap!

While we occasionally stage pre-booked evening brewery tours for small organized parties, probably one of the best ways of sampling our beers is to call next door at our brewery tap, The Plough, where Ray and Sarah Hall also serve great food. We’ve recently spent around £100,000 doing the place up, so we hope you’ll like it! If you don’t want to drive, take the 435 Shrewsbury-Ludlow bus which stops outside our door, or take a train to Craven Arms and a mile or so stroll or taxi ride to the pub (pre-book Arms Cars 01588 672734, Rocket Cars 07890 904732 or Alan’s Cab 07970 683126).
